Why Special Treks For Seniors

Over the years, we’ve seen seniors return from treks feeling 10–20 years younger, lighter, and more joyful. Yet many hesitate to join regular groups—worried about keeping pace with trekkers much younger than themselves.

That’s why we started special treks for seniors. Here, everyone belongs to the same age group, moving at a comfortable pace on thoughtfully chosen routes. Among peers, seniors feel free, confident, and at ease.

And when they trek together, something magical happens—they laugh, share stories, and rediscover their inner child. As a senior trekker beautifully put it, “I don’t get to bond like this every day.”

Our first such trek in 2023 showed us what was possible. Since then, these treks have been about more than reaching a campsite—they’re about confidence, resilience, and coming back feeling years younger.

Indiahikes organized an exciting, challenging, and adventurous four-day, three-night "Chhattisgarh Jungle Seniors Trek" in Guru Ghasidas National Park in the Koriya district of Chhattisgarh. The trek included dense forests, the Maikal Hills, and the Chota Nagpur Plateau, as well as walking through a crystal clear river and exploring mysterious caves with ten to fifteen thousand-year-old rock paintings. The total trek covered 24 km and involved traversing jungles and hills, wading through ankle-deep, cold water of the Gopat River, and climbing to an altitude of 2377 feet and descending at a 70° angle, making it quite difficult and challenging. Spending nights in tents amidst the jungle, by the lake and river, was very exciting and felt like being in the lap of nature.

The trekking schedule was from November 16th to November 19th, 2025. It included a total of twenty-four trekkers from different parts of the country such as Bangalore, Mysore, Kochi, Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Jabalpur, Kolkata, and Lucknow, including eight couples. They were mostly retired bankers, professors, scientists, engineers, writers, and IT professionals. Every trekker thoroughly enjoyed this exhilarating trek.

Thank you, Indiahikes, for arranging a fantastic trek. This was certainly one of the best trails I have ever done. The location of both the campsites was amazing. The 2nd day trail was a perfect mix of beauty and challenge. River walk, though longer than expected, was a unique experience. Special thanks to Mahip for helping Ujjwal out on the tricky descent. Food was awesome as usual. Happy to meet so many wonderful new friends. Hope to see you again in the mountains. Overall, a great experience.

Available Treks

With a high staff-to-trekker ratio, specially trained Trek Leaders, health support, and facilities like backpack offloading and bio-toilets, every detail is taken care of. To accommodate this expertise, the trek fee is ₹3000 more than the regular fee.

How trek for seniors is different from regular treks

Yes, we want everyone to trek because trekking transforms lives. But we must also acknowledge that age plays a role in how treks are experienced. After 30, muscle mass reduces steadily—around 3–8% every decade.

This is why seniors’ treks are not just regular treks repackaged. They are thoughtfully redesigned—keeping pace, terrain, and care in mind—so seniors can trek comfortably and joyfully.

What makes them different?

  • Route and pace adjustments: The itinerary is reconfigured to ensure comfortable walking distances, pre-planned breaks, and camps placed within reach.
  • Higher safety ratio: For every 5 trekkers, there is 1 Indiahikes team member. This ensures personal attention, additional safety, and care throughout the trek.
  • Extra facilities: Western toilet seats are available at all bio-toilets, stools are placed at every campsite, and backpack offloading is included as part of the trek fee. Seniors are also served tea and snacks at regular intervals on the trail.
  • Health checks and support: Daily BP checks are conducted. Our Trek Leaders go through intense medical and psychological training to ensure both physical safety and emotional comfort for seniors.
  • Menu for seniors: The food menu is adapted to suit seniors’ dietary needs, with light yet energising meals.
  • The Trek Design: The trek is designed to ignite the children in seniors. Senior trekkers are encouraged to share stories from the times that younger trekkers have never experienced. Yes, special treks for senior trekkers are about the trail. But it is a lot more about laughing together, sharing stories and bringing in a sense of playfulness that your routine lives would rarely allow.

In essence, these treks are designed with extra care, safety, and thoughtful facilities so seniors can focus on what truly matters—bonding, laughing, and rediscovering their inner child.

How do we ensure your safety on a Senior's Trek

At Indiahikes, safety is non‑negotiable.

Every year, more than 30,000 trekkers, including children and seniors, have trekked with us — without a single untoward incident.

This comes from our robust Risk Assessment and Management System, built on three pillars: People, Processes, and Equipment.

  1. People: Our Trek Leaders are certified mountaineers with a Basic Mountaineering Course or Advanced Mountaineering Course. Trek Leaders assigned to lead summer camps are Wilderness First Responders (WFR) and NOLS certified. They have led several Himalayan treks, ranging from moderate-difficult to difficult treks. All our mountain staff have gone through extensive training to handle emergencies.
  2. Processes: For over a decade, it has been our water-tight safety process that has mitigated all kinds of risks, ranging from health-related and medical risks to outdoor risks. This process includes our initial safety check-in at the base camp, our thrice-a-day health checks, and our medical protocol in case of any symptoms. Additionally, all risks associated with the program are analysed in advance, and a risk mitigation plan is developed. Every possible risk is properly planned for. Processes have been put in place for all common emergency scenarios. Our staff are trained to follow these processes stringently.
  3. Equipment: Most modern safety equipment regularly used on treks in India was introduced by Indiahikes. We have safety equipment of the highest standards. On the trek, the trek group will carry a fully equipped safety and medical kit, an evacuation kit and a technical gear kit. This provides support for the team to handle any emergency in a proficient way.
