Why Join a Stargazing Trek?
Do you know what it's like to trek through the Himalayas, reach the campsite, and look up at a sky dotted with stars, planets, and the transcendental band of the Milky Way Galaxy? That’s what a stargazing trek feels like.
Unlike regular treks, these are designed around celestial events and astronomical observations, giving you the chance to see planets, star clusters, nebulae, and meteor showers in their natural form.
On these Himalayan night sky treks, you’ll use telescopes, binoculars, and naked-eye observation techniques to explore the cosmos. Trek leaders guide you through constellations, lunar phases, and celestial navigation. You even get to try astrophotography, capturing the Milky Way stretching over the mountains.
Whether you’re a beginner curious about astronomy, an amateur stargazer, or an aspiring astrophotographer, a stargazing trek transforms a regular trek into a learning-focused adventure under the sky, where every observation of the sky tells a story.
Trekkers share their experience
Srishti Kedia
"...it will be the real-life magical experience of Disney animated movies, where you cannot sleep because your reality is better than your dreams."
Raja Emmela

Supriya Sethu

What happens on a stargazing trek?
A stargazing trek is not just about looking at the night sky. Every stargazing session is layered with different kinds of experiences:
- Naked-eye observations: Trek leaders use a laser pointer or a powerful torch to help you identify constellations, planets, and the arc of the Milky Way.
- Telescope and binocular observations: Telescopes and Binoculars help you see planets, craters of the moon, star clusters, and nebulae.
- Learning through stories and games: Trek leaders are not astrophysicists, but they are specially trained to share observational knowledge, stories from mythology, and fun sky-based experiences. This is not something that can be done without training.
- Special cosmic events: If you are lucky, you may witness meteor showers late in the night. These are among the most unforgettable highlights of a stargazing trek.
How a Stargazing Trek Differs From a Regular Trek
At its core, a stargazing trek follows the same trail as a regular trek. But the design of the trek itself is different — both during the day and at night.
In the evenings, the focus shifts to the night skies. After dinner, your time is devoted to stargazing sessions. Depending on what’s visible, you may sometimes wake up at midnight or before dawn. For example:
- Venus is often seen just before sunrise.
- The Milky Way is visible in March–April before dawn.
- In May and June, some spectacular sights appear around midnight.
In the daytime, too, the theme continues.
- Conversations revolve around the stars, planets, and astronomy stories.
- You may engage in fun sky-based games or storytelling sessions.
- Trek leaders also set up solar observations using filters or projection methods so you can safely see sunspots on the surface of the sun.
So while on a regular trek, nights are for resting and days are about trekking, on a stargazing trek, every part of the day is infused with the theme of the cosmos.
Treks with special stargazing groups
We take you to quiet, clear spots where the stars shine brightest, guided by our staff and Trek Leaders who are specially trained to lead you and share the stories of the night sky. To accommodate this expertise, the trek fee is ₹3000 more than the regular fee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you are an amateur looking to learn about stargazing or an expert astrophile looking to observe some of the greatest celestial shows, this trek is for you.
Joining this trek means getting to spend 6 days together with like-minded people who enjoy stargazing as much as you do.
For stargazing, we choose treks that have open views, and have a vantage point like a ridge from where you can witness the starlit sky. We started our stargazing treks from Brahmatal trek, where you camp on the ridge, at Tilandi. It is one of the best-known campsites for stargazing in the Himalayas.
Another trek that we have chosen for stargazing is the Phulara Ridge trek. On this trek too you have open vistas, a stunning ridge and campsites that are great for observing the night-sky.
The trek leaders are trained rigorously to be able to execute this experience.
Yes, you can. Both the southern Indian treks that we run out of Bangalore have their bases far from the city. Here the sky is clear and without any pollution. However, to spot stars, you also have to have the weather gods on your side.
The itinerary will be same as a regular trek. We have selected a few campsites that offer exceptional views. Your trek leader will be facilitating the experiences on such selected campsites and according to the weather.
On this trek, you will meet many such enthusiasts like you. You can discuss advanced topics and theories with your trek leader and other interested co-trekkers too.
Safety is always a concern when moving at night. But Indiahikes ensures:
- Most stargazing sessions happen right near the campsite.
- Trek leaders and guides are always present.
- Rarely, trekkers may walk a short distance for better visibility — like from Tali campsite to Tali Lake — but only if safe and feasible.
Another important safety point: carry a headlamp with a red light mode. White light disrupts night vision and takes longer for the eyes to readjust. Red light keeps you safe without disturbing your ability to see the stars.
