Age Limits on Indiahikes Treks
  • We have age limits on our treks. But we like to make exceptions wherever possible as we strongly believe that your age should never hold you back from exploring the outdoors.

  • However, if you are above 58 years old and want to join this trek, you would need to submit a Negative Tread Mill Test (TMT) Report that is no older than one year from the date of your trek. This is over and above your fitness criteria requirements. Read more about it here.

  • If you are unsure, just give us a call on 080-468-01269. We’ll help you choose the trek that best suits your fitness and experience.
Fitness Criteria for Moderate Treks
  • Run 5km in 35 mins.

  • If you can't jog for some reason, try brisk-walking 10 km under 90-100 mins.

  • Use fitness tracking apps such as Strava, Nike Run Club, or similar to log your runs and workouts.

  • Paste your profile's link on your Indiahikes account (your profile has to be public).

  • Ensure that at least 3 runs from the last 1 month meet the fitness criteria of your specific trek.

  • If you are above 58 years old and want to join this trek, you would need to submit a recent Negative Tread Mill Test (TMT) Report that is no older than one year from the date of your trek. This is over and above your fitness criteria requirements. Read more about it here.

  • Please take the fitness criteria seriously. Being unprepared on a trek not only hampers your own experience but is also a safety hazard for you and the entire team.
CLOAKROOM

What is Indiahikes Cloakroom facility?

If you’re carrying extra luggage that you don’t want to take along on your trek, you’ll find a cloakroom facility available at all base camps. This is where you can safely leave your non-essential bags behind.

You won’t have access to your cloakroom bag during the trek. So, if there’s anything you might need on the trail — keep it in your trekking backpack, not in the cloakroom.

You can leave behind one piece of luggage at no charge. Anything beyond one piece of luggage is chargeable at Rs 500 per luggage.

Note: Do not leave any valuables in your cloakroom bag. Items like your wallet, passport, or laptop are best kept with you. That’s because this is not a locker facility. All the bags are stored together in a single room, and while our teams monitor them, there’s no individual security for each bag.

The Best Rhododendron Trek of India

Trekking in Uttarakhand, has so far, been synonymous with trekking in Garhwal. But Ranthan Kharak reveals the hidden magic of Kumaon. The trek weaves through quaint villages, and vast clearings and leads you to ridges offering incredible mountain views.

However, the main surprise waits in the forests ahead of Namik. This is where you start seeing rhododendrons. If you are trekking in April, at the peak of the blooming season, the sheer abundance and diversity of flowers blow your mind. From bushes and shrubs to tall, stout Rhodo trees– you see them all. Reds and pinks and whites– they are everywhere.

Encountering Rhodos on a Himalayan trek is not rare in our country. If you time it right, you get to trek amidst these flowers on many treks like Deoriatal Chandrashila, Sandakphu, and Goecha La. At Indiahikes, we have trekked amidst blooming rhododendrons countless times. Yet, nothing matches up to what we experienced at Ranthan. Pritish Bhanushali, our in-house cinematographer, visited Ranthan Kharak in May. “It was past the peak blooming season, and flowers had begun to wilt. Still, I saw more rhodos on this trek than what I had seen in the peak blooming seasons at Deoriatal Chandrashila”, is what he had to say about his experience.

But this is only the beginning of Ranthan Kharak’s charm. The trek offers an experience that goes beyond just its rhododendrons. In late May and June, the meadows are lush and dotted with a burst of blooming wildflowers. At Ranthan Top, you’re greeted by spectacular mountain views. To the west, you see the legendary peaks of Garhwal, including Nanda Devi, Maiktoli, Trisul, and Dang Thyal, while the iconic Panchachuli peaks of Kumaon dominate the eastern horizon. It has an extensive ridge walk, like the Phulara Ridge and an excellent climb to Ranthan Top, which is as good a summit climb as Kedarkantha.

But despite all these highlights, it’s the rhododendrons that stand out the most. Witnessing the vibrant blossoms in Ranthan is simply unparalleled. It’s not without reason that we call it the “Best Rhododendron Trek of India.”

With all that it offers, Ranthan Kharak is a moderate trek. It climbs to an altitude of 12,887 feet over a distance of 38 km, which you cover in five days. The final push to Ranthan Top can be a test of endurance. However, there are no tricky or technical sections on this trek. While prior trekking experience helps, fit beginners can safely attempt the Ranthan Kharak Trek.

What makes the Ranthan Kharak Trek Special:

Expansive Clearings in the Forests

One of the most striking features of the trek is the massive clearings, or kharaks, nestled amidst dense forests. These open spaces, much larger than those found on most Uttarakhand treks, resemble undulating football fields surrounded by towering trees. The experience of camping in these serene clearings is magical, offering both tranquillity and breathtaking views.

Ridges and Ledges: A Perfect Combination

The trail on Ranthan Kharak seamlessly blends ridges and ledges, making the journey unique and adventurous. After crossing the clearings, trekkers embark on climbs that alternate between these features, leading to stunning viewpoints such as Thal Tok, Chophu Top, and ultimately, Ranthan Kharak itself. For those seeking an extended adventure, a trail from the ridge leads to Nanda Kund, adding a moderate-difficult edge to the trek.

Enchanting Forest Trails

The forests of Ranthan Kharak are a magical mix of oaks, maples and pines. Yet, even amongst these tall and ancient trees, the abundance of rhododendrons stands out prominently. From chirping birds to the scent of pine– walking through these woods is a sensory delight, with every step immersing you in the sounds and scents of nature.

Vibrant Birdlife Along the Trails

Ranthan Kharak’s secluded trails are continuously alive with bird activity. From skittering Verditer Flycatchers to busy woodpeckers and singing barbets– this trek is a haven for bird enthusiasts. Ranthan’s rich avian diversity can rival even the famed Deoriatal Chandrashila trek.

Mountain Views From blooming rhododendrons to unparalleled mountain views and rich birdlife, Ranthan Kharak is a hidden gem in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Whether you're an experienced trekker or a beginner, the quiet charm of this little-known trek stays with you for a long.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Ranthan Kharak trek for several reasons, but its standout feature is undoubtedly the stunning Rhodo garden along the way. The natural beauty of this garden is beyond compare; it’s truly something that no human hands could replicate. The array of Rhodo flowers in every shade along the path was simply mesmerizing.

Another highlight of  the trek is the breathtaking view from the summit, where you can admire the majestic mountain range. Additionally, the trek offers a unique opportunity to see the eastern side of Mt. Nanda Devi and Mt. Nandaghunti.

Lastly, it's a rare and special chance to explore the Kumaon region, adding to the trek’s allure. Finally I did this trek as Semi DIY style which was an added adventure.

I did the trek in may 2024 and needless to say the craving for adventure was definitely satisfied in this trek , there was no one but our teams on the entire trek . I really liked the blend of nature with the mythology Of the locals like the Pandavas swargarohan and ofcourse the best thing about a trek for me is the summit and that I did get , I  got on thaltop twice , once in the evening and again in the morning on summit day . The visuals from the summit were unreal , it was like a dream . So overall you get to experience spirituality , nature and adventure and only very few treks could offer that all in one package and Ranthan kharak is definitely one of them.

This was the perfect trek for me. I was in between jobs, and I wanted to slot a trek. It had the right difficulty level, duration and novelty. What stays in my mind is the walk through the enchanting canopy of flowering rhododendrons. It was a picture straight out a fairy tale. There was also a section where the trail took us through rocks and boulders. It was so magical. The texture of rocks was so beautiful. Though the rocks were randomly strewn about, it seemed a place where angels and mythical creatures would confer. It was delightful to stop by the gurgling, sparkling streams apart from the boisterous Ramganga river. It nourished our water bottles and the need for union with nature. Lastly, it was surreal to see the mighty Nanda Khot emerge during dawn as we ascended the summit. Walking on the ridge under the benevolent gaze of the tall Himalayan peaks was a magical experience.

Ranthan Kharak is a very underrated trek in Uttarakhand. Throughout the journey, you’ll see lush greenery, animals, and insects. The Indiahikes team does a great job providing a luxurious experience, with thoughtful touches like sweets at the end of the day. The Namik campsite offers amazing mountain views. There are some steep climbs, but after the effort, you’re rewarded with a clearing that’s truly breathtaking. It’s a great place to meditate, play, or just enjoy the scenery. At Chofu top, just before the summit, you can see a beautiful sunrise between two mountains and view many other peaks, including Nanda Devi. These were my favorite parts of the trek! Although it’s a relatively new trek, I think it’s one of the best in Uttarakhand.

I’m thrilled to share a bit about my recent trek to Ranthan Kharak, which was an unforgettable experience for me. Ranthan Kharak marked my first-ever trek and my inaugural visit to Uttarakhand.

The 12-hour journey to the basecamp was just a trailer for the adventure ahead, and each glimpse of the Himalayas peeking through valleys or clouds filled me with excitement. I couldn't help but share my enthusiasm with everyone in our traveler, even if they might have thought, "What's up with this guy?" But they understood that I was witnessing the majestic Himalayas for the first time.

The trek itself was nothing short of spectacular. It had everything—serene lakes, cascading waterfalls, dense forests blooming with rhododendrons, scenic clearings, charming villages, and at the summit, a breathtaking 180-degree view of 20-25 peaks. However, the true highlight was the unexpected hailstorm we encountered during our descent. The entire clearing was covered in hail, creating an illusion of snowfall. The golf ball-sized hailstones added an unexpected adrenaline rush, but what stood out most was how our group of 25 people came together as one team to face the challenge.

Ranthan Kharak boasts one of the most serene and breathtaking landscapes. You might think that every trek has its own beauty, and that's true, but Ranthan Kharak is truly something special. Here, you can witness the extremes—soaring heights and deep valleys. The expansive spread of Rhododendrons, the quaint village of Namik with its warm-hearted people, the campsite at Bajimanian, the tranquil lake, the diverse birdlife, the lush bugyal as you ascend, the campsite at Gui, the challenging summit push, and the stunning view of Nanda Devi—everything about Ranthan Kharak is simply mesmerizing. The trek offers so much, which is exactly why I chose it. It's also one of the lesser-known trekking regions in Uttarakhand, adding to its charm. The drive from Kathgodam to Gogina is equally beautiful. I'm so glad and grateful to have had the chance to experience the Ranthan Kharak trek!

Trekking comes with uncertainty. Weather, terrain, and setbacks are part of the journey. We embrace them with resilience and openness—each challenge makes us stronger and more appreciative of nature's beauty.

We embrace low-noise trekking

adlpscdwj 7kst04 lownoisetrekkingicon

We blend into nature, not the other way around. We avoid shouting, loud music, and noisy games. In silence, we hear birdsong, streams, and the wind—inviting peace, reflection, and a deeper connection with nature.

We protect the environment

adlppcdwj 7kst02 protecttheenvironmenticon

We protect the environment by minimising waste, reusing resources, and picking up litter. We carry eco-bags, segregate waste, and inspire others to preserve trails. Sustainable trekking ensures these mountains remain beautiful for future generations.

We are self-sufficient

adlplydwj 7kst01 selfsufficienticon

We carry our load as much as possible, manage our gear, and stay prepared for all situations. Self-sufficiency builds confidence, independence, and respect for fellow trekkers, support staff, and the trail itself.

We support each other

We train well before our treks. This helps us walk longer, handle emergencies, and contribute to the team. Fitness ensures we are never a burden and always ready to help when needed.

Trek Trivia

Who is Balchan Devta and what is the story behind the legendary Balchan Kund?

On Day 3 of the Ranthan Kharak Trek, you camp at Bajimanian Kharak, a secluded clearing amidst dense forests. The campsite is enchanting on its own, but just a short walk away lies a mythical kund (a small waterbody) waiting to be discovered. This is the Balchan Kund. A fascinating story ties it to Balchan Devta, the local deity of Namik village.

Long ago, Namik village faced a severe water crisis. With no water to drink, the villagers were in despair. It is said that Balchan, who is now worshipped as Balchan Devta, created this kund and saved the village. He also discovered other water sources for the villagers. Out of gratitude and reverence, Balchan was hailed as Balchan Devta. There is a grand temple dedicated to him at Namik village. To date, Balchan Kund continues to provide water for Namik village all year round.

So, if you are on the Ranthan Kharak Trek, do not miss out on visiting the legendary Balchan Kund. It is also a very quiet spot and a haven for observing birdlife.

Why is Nanda Kund so special? An untold story from the Ranthan Kharak Trek

Beyond Balchan Kund, there is another sacred kund called Nanda Kund. This kund is believed to have been created by Nanda Devi, the daughter of the Himalayas and the wife of Lord Shiva.

Folklore in the region tells us that Nanda Devi is the eldest of the seven divine daughters of the Himalayas. People celebrate Nanda Devi not just in this area but all across Uttarakhand. Many temples are dedicated to her throughout the state. Even the tallest peak in India, Mt. Nanda Devi, is named after her.

Mt. Nanda Devi stands right at the border of Garhwal and Kumaon. The stories surrounding this mountain deity vary significantly not only between Garhwal and Kumaon but also from one village to the other. Some of these stories link the ring of peaks surrounding Nanda Devi to the seven sisters of the Goddess.

In the high reaches of these mountains, Lord Shiva sat lost in a timeless meditation. Nanda Devi wandered in the region in search of him. One day, while searching for Shiva, She felt very thirsty but couldn’t find any water. To quench Her thirst, She created this waterbody, which later came to be known as Nanda Kund.

At Nanda Kund, devotees navigate a tough trek from Namik to collect the sacred Brahmakamal flower before Nandashtami which falls in September every year. They take a dip in the holy water and bring back the flower to be presented to Nanda Devi at her temples. Villagers also receive this flower as a blessing when they visit the temple.

The tradition of worshipping Nanda Devi dates back to the 16th century when the Chand kings of Kumaon began celebrating her through grand festivals. Even today, the Nanda Devi Fair is held annually at temples dedicated to her, featuring processions, cultural performances, and local crafts.

You do not see the Nanda Kund on the Ranthan Kharak trek. However, the same ridge that leads you to Ranthan Top continues up to the mythical Nanda Kund.
